How to Check If ChatGPT Cites Your Website
Check ChatGPT's cited URLs, distinguish API snapshots from consumer answers, and measure referral visits separately. Includes a repeatable evidence checklist.

To check whether ChatGPT cites your website, ask a real buyer question with web search enabled, open the answer's sources, and look for an exact URL on your domain. Save the question, answer date, cited URL and search context. An answer that only names your brand is a mention; a source link is a citation; someone clicking through is a visit. Measure those separately.
Reviewed November 2, 2026. This guide separates a consumer ChatGPT check from an API-based snapshot, then explains how to check visits without inventing attribution.
Choose the check that answers your question
| Your question | Starting point | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Does consumer ChatGPT cite us for this buyer question? | Ask in ChatGPT with web search enabled; inspect sources | One answer in that interface and context |
| Does the OpenAI web-search API return our domain for a brand check? | ChatGPT visibility checker | One API snapshot, subject to displayed limits and availability |
| What does the wider site audit find? | Free website audit | The checks actually completed in that report; read each status |
| Do citations persist for our chosen questions? | AI visibility monitoring | Your saved observations, question coverage and unknowns |
| Did an identifiable visitor arrive from an AI assistant? | Your analytics source/medium and campaign reports | Collected visits, rather than answer exposure |
The single-engine checker requires a brand and domain. It does not test every buyer question, and it does not reproduce the consumer ChatGPT interface. The cross-engine AI visibility checker is useful when you need to compare supported engines, but unavailable engines are not negative results. Check the displayed timestamp: a cached answer is not a fresh test.
Run a manual ChatGPT citation check
1. Separate brand diagnosis from buyer discovery
Use a branded question such as “What does ExampleCo offer?” to check whether the answer understands the business. Use a separate, unbranded question such as “How can a small Shopify store check whether AI cites its products?” to investigate discovery.
Do not paste your domain into the discovery question or first ask the assistant to visit your website. That changes the task. Save a separate record for any branded or prompted diagnosis.
Start with a few commercially relevant questions. A new wording does not necessarily need a new landing page: related questions can be answered on one useful page.
2. Confirm that search was used
Use ChatGPT's web-search feature and inspect the returned source links. Record the interface and date, and any location or language context you deliberately selected. If there is no usable answer or the request failed, mark the observation unknown rather than “not cited.”
3. Open the cited URLs
Record the exact URL, not just its host. Check whether it supports the surrounding answer and whether it belongs to your domain. A third-party comparison that mentions your company can be useful coverage, but it remains a different outcome from an owned-page citation.
| Record | Example of the field, not a measured result |
|---|---|
| Question | The exact buyer question you submitted |
| Context | Consumer ChatGPT with web search; chosen language/location if supplied |
| Time | The date and time the answer was obtained |
| Status | Cited, not cited in this answer, or unknown |
| Source | Exact returned URL and relevant passage |
| Next action | Correct a specific fact, improve a missing answer, or retain as a baseline |
4. Repeat consistently
Keep the same question and context for a later comparison. Source lists may change. A single negative observation does not establish permanent absence, and changing the wording, location and interface together makes a before/after comparison hard to interpret.
You can use TriRank's saved citation tracking workflow to organize repeated evidence. API observations and manually collected consumer answers should remain separate series.
Check search access without changing training policy
OpenAI's crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, used for potential training collection, and ChatGPT-User, used for user-triggered requests. Allowing the search crawler does not require allowing training.
Check the public page, robots rules and hosting/CDN access. A robots.txt validation can identify a rule to inspect; it does not prove that every vendor IP can fetch the page. A user-agent request counter also does not prove a successful response, verified bot identity or a human visit. Our dated crawler observations illustrate that distinction.
Measure visits separately from citations
In analytics, review session source / medium, landing page and campaign parameters in a fixed date window. Look for identifiable assistant sources such as chatgpt.com and the legacy chat.openai.com. Inspect the actual UTM values on received links rather than assuming one permanent parameter value for every interface.
Keep these limitations visible:
- Copied links, native apps and privacy settings can leave no usable source information.
- Direct is an unknown source category for this purpose, not a bucket to relabel as AI.
- Your own tests, account-login returns and reviewer sessions can inflate visits. Separate explicitly marked QA where the evidence permits it.
- An identified AI visit is not a signup or payment. Follow the actual event or order trail before claiming conversion.
Google Analytics documents an AI Assistant channel, while Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode belong to Organic Search. A source-level view is still useful for distinguishing individual assistants and diagnosing unexpected classifications.
What GSC can and cannot tell you
Google Search Console cannot report ChatGPT citations. It can help prioritize pages using real Google queries, impressions, clicks and positions, but those are a different dataset.
A high-impression, low-CTR query is a reason to investigate the query's intent, result position, title, snippet and search results. It is not proof that an AI Overview appeared, and it does not explain ChatGPT's source selection. Google's AI features documentation explains how its own AI features relate to Search reporting.
If you need Google Overview evidence, use the separate AI Overviews tracker, which explains the difference between a saved observation and a live request. Do not substitute Gemini API answers for a Google search-result observation.
Turn a missing citation into one concrete task
Open the sources returned for the buyer question. What useful answer, comparison, example or evidence does the reader get there that your page lacks? Write the smallest justified change, then record its URL and actual publication time.
For a reachable page with a buried answer, the content rewriter can help prepare a clearer passage to review. Use the schema generator only for applicable markup that matches visible content; markup is not a citation guarantee. For an external page with outdated product facts, prepare a factual correction and let its editor decide.
The practical loop is: question → dated answer and source → specific change → publication record → comparable follow-up. For the work behind that loop, read the ChatGPT citation playbook. No step guarantees inclusion, rankings or sales.
FAQ
How do I check if ChatGPT cites my website?
Ask a buyer question in ChatGPT with web search enabled, open the answer's sources, and record any exact URL on your domain. Keep the question, date and search context. TriRank's ChatGPT checker offers a separate OpenAI API web-search snapshot; its result can differ from the consumer interface.
Does a brand mention count as a citation?
No. A brand mention, a cited URL and a referral visit are separate observations. A review of your product on another website is a third-party source, not a citation of your own domain.
Can Google Search Console show ChatGPT citations?
No. Search Console reports Google Search, not ChatGPT. Low Google click-through rate does not establish that an AI Overview appeared or caused the result. Inspect the relevant search result separately.
Does blocking GPTBot prevent ChatGPT search citations?
GPTBot manages potential training use; OAI-SearchBot is the search crawler. Their controls are independent. Check the search crawler's access without changing your training preference just to seek citations.
Does a citation prove ChatGPT sent a visitor?
No. Check actual analytics source and campaign fields for identifiable visits. A citation can receive no clicks, and a visit with no source information remains unattributed. Do not assign all Direct traffic to AI.
