How the verdict is decided: the probe calls OpenAI's Responses API with the web-search tool switched on and reads the url_citation annotations OpenAI attaches to the reply. Those annotations are the links ChatGPT itself put behind its sentences. The prose is never read, so a brand ChatGPT praised without linking counts as not cited here — a narrower claim than “ChatGPT knows about you”, and the one we can actually stand behind.
What answered is the API, not the chat window. The Responses API with web search is the closest programmatic stand-in for ChatGPT-with-browsing, and it is a stand-in: the consumer app personalises, remembers earlier turns, and may route a question to a different model than this probe uses. Read the verdict as evidence about the engine, never as a screenshot of somebody's session.
