Two tools an agent-first SEO team may put side by side. This page only states what we could read on September 22, 2026: OpenSEO's GitHub README and its own pages at openseo.so (features, MCP, agent skills, pricing), and TriRank's own product. Where we could not read something, we leave it out rather than guess.
What OpenSEO does
OpenSEO describes itself as an "open source alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs". The code is on GitHub under the MIT licence, and the repository dates from February 2026.
- Workflows. Its README lists keyword research, rank tracking, competitor insights, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility.
- Data source. SEO data comes from DataForSEO. You bring your own DataForSEO API key and pay DataForSEO directly when you self-host, on Docker or on Cloudflare. The hosted plan is $10/month with $10 of usage included; the README says the hosted service charges 28% on top of each DataForSEO request.
- MCP server. Its MCP page lists tools for keyword research, live SERP results, saved keywords, rank-tracker data, domain overview, domain keywords, backlink overview, and Search Console performance and URL inspection. It names Claude, Cursor and Codex as clients.
- Agent skills. A documented set of skills runs on top of the MCP: project setup, an SEO coach, an SEO audit, keyword research, keyword clustering, competitive landscape, competitor analysis, local SEO, link prospecting, and a shared report skill that saves each result as a page in your project. A Claude Code plugin and a Codex plugin install the MCP and the skills in one step.
- AI visibility. A brand lookup shows ChatGPT and Google AI Overview mentions, cited pages and related prompts for a brand or domain. A prompt explorer runs one prompt across supported models, compares the answers, and shows citations when a model returns them. Its pricing estimator puts a ChatGPT brand check at about $1.09.
What TriRank does
TriRank measures whether AI answer engines cite your site, and keeps that measurement over time.
- Tracked questions, swept repeatedly. You choose the questions a buyer would ask. TriRank asks them across Google (Gemini grounding), ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode, and stores each engine's verdict, so a change shows up as a change rather than as two unrelated snapshots.
- Per country. A tracked question can carry the country it is asked from. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity receive that country as the searcher's location; engines whose API has no location setting are asked without one, and the result says so.
- Tied to Search Console. The citation gap is the list of queries you already rank on page 1 of Google for where an engine does not cite you. It needs your Search Console connection, and without it the gap is reported as unknown, not empty.
- Who is cited instead. The Actions page names domains cited on your probed questions where you are not, and the kind of page they mostly win with.
- MCP and skills. A read-only MCP server returns your rankings, reports, AI visibility, citation gaps, cited pages, content gaps, page scores and Domain Rating. The skills on the MCP page are instructions you paste into your agent.
- Free, no account. The free AI visibility checker asks about any brand, optionally from a chosen country, and compares two markets side by side.
Plans and prices are on the pricing page.
When to use OpenSEO
- You want keyword volumes, difficulty, SERP snapshots, backlink data and site audits on a pay-per-use basis.
- You want to self-host, read the code, or fork it into your own tool.
- You want ready-made agent skills for keyword research, clustering, competitor analysis, local SEO and link prospecting.
- You want a lookup of how ChatGPT and Google AI Overview mention a brand, or to compare how models answer one prompt.
When to use TriRank
- You need to know whether AI engines cite your site on the questions you care about, engine by engine, and how that changes from one sweep to the next.
- You sell into more than one country and need the same question asked from each market.
- You want citation gaps measured against the queries Search Console says you already rank for.
- You want to see which domains are cited in your place, and what kind of page they win with.
Using them together
The two do different jobs, so the useful setup is both on the same agent. OpenSEO supplies the SEO data: which keywords to target, what the SERP looks like, who links to a competitor, what an audit finds. TriRank supplies the citation measurement: whether the answer engines cite you on the questions you track, from which country, and what moved since the last sweep. An agent connected to both MCP servers can research a topic with one and check the citation reading with the other.

FAQ
What is the main difference between OpenSEO and TriRank?+
OpenSEO is an open-source SEO suite — keyword research, rank tracking, competitor and backlink data, site audits, and an AI visibility lookup — that you run on your own DataForSEO key or on its hosted plan. TriRank measures whether AI answer engines cite your site on the questions you track, keeps every verdict so you can watch it change, and ties it to your Google Search Console data.
Do both have an MCP server?+
Yes. OpenSEO's MCP server exposes keyword, SERP, domain, backlink, saved-keyword, rank-tracking and Search Console tools, and it ships agent skills that run SEO workflows on top of them. TriRank's MCP server exposes read-only tools for your rankings, reports, AI visibility, citation gaps, cited pages, content gaps, page scores and Domain Rating, with skills listed on its MCP page.
Can I use OpenSEO and TriRank together?+
Yes. They answer different questions. OpenSEO supplies the SEO research data — keywords, SERPs, backlinks, audits. TriRank supplies the citation measurement — which AI engines cite you on which tracked questions, from which country, and how that changes. Both connect to the same agent over MCP.
